Overview
The university city of Konstanz, Stein am Rhein’s Hohenklingen castle, the vineyards of historic Meersburg, the island town of Lindau, Friedrichshafen and the charming town of Radolfzell – just some of the highlights of a tour around Upper and Lower Lake Constance which brings together great gentle cycling with so many cultural influences and places to visit. This tour includes ferry crossings, boat trips and admission to attractions as stated.
Itinerary
There is a choice of excellent circular day rides around the Lake, each covering between 31-44 miles/50-70 kms. Most include a passage by ferry across the water to ensure that you can enjoy a wide range of lakeside destinations, fantastic views of the Alps and three countries-worth of culture without too long in the saddle.
Your base on this holiday is either in a selected 3 star hotel or unrated, but very comfortable and well-located hotel in the central, historic quarter of Konstanz. Alternatively you can choose to stay in an apartment hotel in a more modern part of town. We are pleased to discuss accommodation options with you.

The circular rides
We offer a choice of 4 circular routes with distances between 10 and 37 miles (15 to 60 kms), with each ride carefully planned to make sure you see the best of the area and that you travel the distance you are most comfortable with.
Please see below for details of ferry transfers and attractions admissions included in the tour price.
Circular ride 1 – Baroque masterpieces & monkey business
Cycle out from Konstanz to Wallhausen, catching the ferry to Uberlingen. The pilgrimage road leads down to Birnau’s wonderful Baroque masterpiece of an abbey church with beautiful lakeland views as you pedal amidst the vineyards. Then it’s on to the famous castle at Salem or perhaps a visit to the Affenberg (entrance not included) to spot some of the 200 semi-wild Berber monkeys. Cycling on to Meersburg, you will finally catch the ferry back from here back to Konstanz.
Circular ride 2 – Off to Meersburg & Lindau
Travel by boat from Konstanz to Meersburg to visit the castle, then on through orchards to Markdorf, descending down into Friedrichshafen, the area’s second largest town, once noted for its construction of the Zeppelin airships. Visit the Zeppelin museum perhaps before pedalling onwards along the Lake Constance cycle path to Langenargen, through the lovely villages of Wasserburg and Nonnenhorn to the metropolis of Lindau . From Lindau the boat takes you back to Konstanz.
Circular ride 3 – Impressive treasures: Reichenau Island & Stein am Rhein
Heading out westwards from Konstanz along the northern shores of the lower lake, you arrive at the World Heritage Site of Reichenau Island down a tree-lined causeway. A land of vegetables and vineyards, this idyllic spot is famed for its monastery and its churches which date from the 9th – 11th centuries. From here a boat brings you across to Gaienhofen on the Höri peninsular where you can visit the house of the famous author, Herman Hesse, before you pedal on via Hemmenhofen to the almost completely intact medieval town of Stein am Rhein. Your return is along the southern shore of the lower lake passing through Steckborn and the small village of Gottlieben on the way to Konstanz.
Circular ride 4 – The garden island of Mainau
Make a day trip of it visiting the magical island of Mainau, Count Bernadotte’s ‘island of flowers‘. Bikes are not allowed on the island, so park by the bridge and wander into a floral wonderland, renowned for its spring tulips, summer roses, autumn dahlias , arboretum and palm garden. There is even a butterfly house and a castle to explore as well as many other attractions.
