Overview
Pedal away from the magic of Munich through some of Germany’s most stunning Alpine scenery, past refreshing Bavarian lakes and up into Austria to tune into Mozart’s Salzburg. Enjoy mainly easy cycling on country lanes or cycle paths, with a few hills and busier connecting roads dotted along the way.
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive & explore
Make the most of Munich. Take to the terrace café for a refreshing and appropriately frothy Bavarian welcome, head to the market place for a spot of clock-watching with a difference, or graze the historic streets of colourful shops. Atmosphere, culture, history – there’s plenty to take in as well as a beer or two, or a delicious glass of German wine.
Day 2 Down the Isar to Bad Tölz
Splendid towns line the day’s cycling which ghosts around ancient salt routes and the River Isar, heading through the lush forests of the aptly named Grünwald towards the proud spa town of Bad Tölz.
Overnight Bad Tölz.
Miles: 37 Kms: 60
Day 3 Pastures and panoramas
A shorter route today as your pedal around lake Tegensee to Gmund for some truly amazing vistas. Then it’s on to explore the greenest meadows around Lake Schliersee. This area is known as ‘Bavarian Merano’, famed for its mild climate and 30,000 fruit trees.
Overnight Schliersee.
Miles: 22 Kms: 35
Day 4 A breath of fresh air in Rosenheim
Another day in the lush scenery of the ‘Bavarian Merano’, pedalling through the delightful Rosenheim district which is renowned for health-promoting atmosphere. Your undulating path leads to Bad Feilnbach, an unassuming little town which itself has a big reputation for its spa and wellness opportunities. Sounds like the ideal place to relax and reflect on your day when you reach your comfortable hotel.
Miles: 22 Kms: 35
Day 5 From peat to port
Head out across Bavaria’s largest peat plot to Neubeuern whose coat of arms betrays its debt to boat building history. On to Frasdorf at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps before a pedal to the refreshing expansive waters of the Bavarian Sea – Lake Chiemsee. Anchor up here on the south bank for the night.
Miles: 28 Kms: 45
Day 6 Moors and ‘Malerei’
Strangely enough the mountains seem to get higher and the roads even flatter! Up and over the Bergner Moos today, a moorland at the foot of Hochfelln. Then its on to the medicinal waters of Bad Adelholzen and the natural history treasures of Siegsdorf. The River Rote Traun leads to the idyllic town of Inzell with its wonderfully painted houses, some of the most stunning examples of the local floral decorative art of ‘Lüftlmalerei’.
Miles: 19 Kms: 30
Day 7 Across beautiful borderlands to Salzburg
Cycle the greenest of valleys today along the river Saalach via Schneitzelreuth to the mighty spa town of Bad Reichenhall. Then it’s time to follow the Tauern cycle path across the border into Austria to immerse yourself in the magic of Mozart in the tiny streets and under the shadows of the mighty castle in Salzburg… time to relax on the terraces again and reflect on the highlights of a tour which has taken you to the top of the Bavarian world.
Miles: 34 Kms: 55
Day 8 Depart after breakfast
Extra nights in Salzburg may be booked if you would like longer to enjoy the unique experience and rich cultural offerings of this wonderful city. Alternatively extend your cycling by combining this with either the 10 Lakes holiday or The Mur Cycle Path.
